Abstract:

This study examines the formative assessment tools in kindergarten in a public school in Al Ain City in the UAE. The use of formative rather than summative assessments has recently expanded and recommended to track students’ progress. The aim of this study is to implement different formative assessment tools (running record, learning story, and anecdotal notes), and explain their impact on improving students’ learning results. Action research was used to put these tools into practice with 23 KG2 students over one academic semester. Data was gathered through interviews with 12 KGs teachers at the same school, and weekly reflection journals were provided by the authors as well. The study revealed that running records, anecdotal notes, and the learning story are effective tools of assessment in early childhood. The running record offers good opportunities to assess learners’ attitudes, and behaviors. The learning skills that children should develop can be identified by teachers, who can then establish the learning outcomes that indicate what has been accomplished and what has not based on the success criteria utilized. Teachers can use anecdotal notes to create learning activities, update parents, and get insight into spotting potential developmental delays. Learning stories provide opportunities for children to express their interests and identities. When students create their stories, then become more aware of what they are doing and understanding how they learn. The study recommends using running records as effective formative assessment tool in kindergarten, however, applying more than one assessment  tool will be beneficial to assess different domain of development of children in early childhood education.
