Abstract:

The new emphasis on applying competency-based learning approach (CLA) in Entrepreneurial-STEM learning (E-STEM) leads to the need for competency-based assessment tools (CAT) to track the development of students’ entrepreneurial competencies, and to improve the quality of their E-STEM projects. This requires constructing valid and reliable tools of formative assessment to identify students’ strengths and gaps of learning. The purpose of this study is to create a valid analytical rubric to assess projects and entrepreneurial competencies of students who are enrolled in E-STEM programmes. A qualitative approach was employed to collect triangulated data through semi-structured interviews with two assessment experts in the ministry of education, four teachers in high school, four instructors in higher education, and 12 E-STEM undergraduate students. Theme-based analysis was adopted to gain more in-depth understanding about the applicability and efficiency of the proposed rubric. The current study found that the developed E-STEM rubric is effective to provide a constructive feedback to learners about their competencies and performance. Moreover, the rubric creates more visible learning context to students who were able to explicitly assess their entrepreneurial competencies, and their projects in order to promote their learning outcome. This study offers a valid tool for E-STEM teachers to be able to align their assessment practices with the intended learning outcomes. Further studies are recommended to investigate the effectiveness of the E-STEM rubric in multiple contexts concerning the development of students’ entrepreneurial competencies.

I served the conference as a country coordinator which allowed me to support the conference, and to encourage my students (undergraduate and postgraduate) to participate in international conferences.

I also influenced my colleagues in other campuses to participate in the conference and encourage their students to do so as well. Dr. Robin from Sharjah campus and two of his students submitted their abstracts to participate in the conference.
